Get A Youthful Looking Neck Without Surgery

A reader recently asked us the following question: ”My neck makes me look old. Are there any non-surgical options to treat the problem?”

Our three experts each address the question below.

Jennifer Kauffman, NP-C: Yes! According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed has inflated 747 percent in the last decade. There are many alternatives to surgery to treat lines, firm the skin and help your neck look more youthful. Often times we are so focused on our face that we forget about our neck. The neck is often the first place to look to tell someone’s true age.

One option to treat the bands and wrinkles around your neck is with an injectable such as Botox®. Botox will help relax the neck muscles and soften the lines; however, it will not tighten the skin. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes and there is no downtime afterward. Many patients have it done over their lunch hour and return to work immediately after. You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The treatment must be repeated every three to four months.

Sarah Hill, Laser Technician: A second treatment option is a laser procedure called Titan®. Titan is the first non-surgical light-based system approved by the FDA for dermal heating. It uses light energy to heat up the dermis deep beneath the skin’s surface to help tighten the skin and build new collagen. Without surgery, recovery time or injections, Titan is an all-natural option to tighten and enhance your skin tone. Any sagging skin will be tightened and fine lines and wrinkles will soften as your body begins to produce more collagen to fill in those lines. There is no downtime with this procedure. Watch this clip from “The View” of Titan being performed on the arm.

Jamie Plack, Makeup Artist: A third way to battle those neck lines and even “turkey neck” is by using a cream specifically for the neck twice a day. The No. 1 neck cream on the market today is Nectifirm by Revision. The skin on your neck is much different and more fragile than the skin on your face and requires its own unique medical skin care. Nectifirm’s peptide ingredients are designed to target the symptoms of an aging neck and not just exfoliate. It is designed to help stimulate the growth of new collagen in your neck to help your skin appear firmer and smoother. For enhanced and quicker results, apply Revision’s Revox II first and then your Nectifirm. Revox II is a blend of five anti-aging peptides that reduce the length and depth of expression lines.

Finally, using bronzer to camouflage the area is another non-surgical option. Find a matte bronzer darker than your skin tone, such as jane iredale’s So Bronze 2, and apply it with a large powder brush both along your jaw line and in a triangle shape under your chin to slim it down. Apply bronzer down the front of the neck to create shadow and the look of a smaller neck. If the bronzer has a highlighter color with it don’t use this to contour. Be sure to blend well!

We hope these various treatments provide you some non-surgical options to tackle that turkey neck. Talk to your medical skin care professional about the best plan for you. It’s never too early to start taking care of your neck!

Q&A: Why Is My Skin So Dull?

Q. Why is my skin so dull and what can I do about it? Cindy, Warsaw

That is a very common complaint, Cindy. After the age of 30, our skin’s exfoliation process slows down significantly. This means we have lots of dead skin cells just sitting on our face, which gives us that dull or lifeless complexion. It’s important to remove those cells monthly in order to keep your skin bright and glowing.

There are several ways to tackle removing that dead skin. The first option is microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure which uses crystals to exfoliate the dead skin off of your face. It is commonly performed at day spas or salons by an esthetician.

The next step up from microdermabrasion is vibradermabrasion. It is a more medical version of microdermabrasion. Instead of “sand blasting” the face with crystals, vibradermabrasion uses paddles to remove the dead skin, which also stimulates new collagen production for younger looking skin.

The chemical peel is like Pac-Man and your dead skin cells are like the Pac-Dots.

Taking it even a step further and even more medical are monthly chemical peels. Think of chemical peels like the old video game Pac-Man. The peel is Pac-Man and your dead skin is the pac-dots. The peel gobbles up all of the dead skin and your face is the winner.

There are three levels of chemical peels: surface peels, medium-depth peels and deep peels. The deep peels are only performed in a plastic surgeon’s office under anesthesia. These peels are the most effective at removing deep lines and wrinkles, but also come with significant down time. Patients undergoing deep chemical peels typically don’t leave their home for one to two weeks at least. Most women don’t have time for that. Medium depth peels were designed to get the same results as deep peels with less down time and no anesthesia required. With a medium-depth peel, patients can expect two to three days of peeling, which can be scheduled so you peel on the weekend. The lightest chemical peel is the surface peel. These are done with little to no downtime. They are designed to simply remove the dead skin whereas the medium depth peels help to get rid of brown spots and fine lines along with the dead skin. Newer peels on the market today are much more patient friendly. They are designed to cause much less peeling, but still offer the same benefits. All three types of chemical peels will exfoliate your skin and give you a radiant glow.

A final option to get rid of that dull skin is to follow a medical skin care routine at home. Medical skin care will help that exfoliation process we all need as we age to keep our skin looking young. The process includes using retinol and alpha hydroxy acids on a daily basis. Medical skin care can only be found in plastic surgeons’ offices, dermatologists’ offices and medical spas.

The key to any of the above options is maintenance. In order to maintain the results you desire and combat that dull, lifeless skin, you must do something every 30 days to remove the dead skin. In addition, you must follow a daily medical skin care regime. Talk to your medical skin care professional to find out which options are best for you, Cindy. In no time your skin will be glowing.

Top 5 Medi Spa Must Haves For Fall

Today is the first day of fall. With the change in seasons, also comes a change in your medical skin care and makeup. Below you will find our top five “medi spa must haves” for fall, so grab your hot chocolate and “fall” into beauty.

1. Clarisonic

The Clarisonic is a sonic cleaning device unlike any other product on the market. It is so gentle, fast and easy to use. Use it twice a day for one minute. You can even use it in the shower! The Clarisonic gets rid of six times more makeup than just cleaning with your hands. This means that not only will your serum, moisturizer and other medical skin care become even more effective, but your makeup will go on better as well. Oprah called the Clarisonic “the miracle massage for your face.” We agree!

2. BerryLip Color

We know starting this time of year people start feeling pale. Instantly brighten up your face with a fall-inspired berry lip stain by Jane Iredale in the shades Fetish or Rapture. Her lip stains are fantastic because they truly last all day long and they won’t dry out your lips.

3. Teamine

When the days begin to shorten and it’s harder to get out of bed leaving you with dark under eye circles or puffy eyes (or both), don’t fret! We love Teamine by Revision. It’s the No. 1 eye cream to lighten dark under-eye circles (and it really works). It also helps decrease puffiness. Put it on in the morning and 30 minutes later your puffy eyes will be diminished!

4. Neova Night Therapy

Turning the heat back on in your house is not hot for your skin. To combat the dryness that comes with kicking on the heat, we use Neova Night Therapy. Why? It is clinically formulated to stay on your skin and not rub off on your pillow, which means your skin is getting protection, moisture and hydration all night long! It is also full of copper peptides, which have been proven to stimulate collagen and elastin production for younger looking skin.

5. Sunscreen

No, this isn’t our summer must have list. We said it. You still need sunscreen all year long. Lips too! Our favorite sunscreen has to be Obagi’s Sunshield 50. It’s lightweight and formulated so anyone can wear it. For the lips, try Jane Iredale’s lip drink for a dose of hydration and SPF15.
