Don’t Be Scared By Your Wrinkles

A reader recently asked us the following question: The wrinkles on my face are starting to bother me. What are the options to treat them?

Our three experts each address the question below.

Jennifer Kauffman, NP-C: That is a very common concern. There are several treatment options available to scare those wrinkles away without having to have surgery.

One option to treat the fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes (commonly referred to as smile lines or crow’s feet), the frown lines in between your eyes and the expression lines in your forehead is with an injectable medication such as Botox® or Dysport®. These medications help relax the muscles and soften the wrinkles.

Many women fear losing their expression or looking unnatural. After receiving the treatment, you will still be able to smile, frown, and look natural. We have all seen the look of Hollywood, but in the Midwest, we strive for a more natural look. The goal of Botox or Dysport is to reduce wrinkles without others noticing you have had any treatments. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes and there is no downtime afterward. Many patients have it done over their lunch hour and return to work immediately after. You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The treatment must be repeated every three to four months to keep up the results.

Sarah Hill, Laser Technician: A second treatment option is a laser procedure called Pearl Fractional®. Pearl Fractional is designed to treat fine lines and deep wrinkles associated with photo damage as opposed to wrinkles caused from frowning or smiling. This treatment stimulates the body’s own natural process for creating new collagen, plumping the skin from below and reversing photo aging and other imperfections. Removing only a small portion, or a “fraction,” of the skin ensures a safe treatment with a rapid recovery.

Jamie Plack, Makeup Artist: A third way to battle those fine lines and wrinkles, if you are not ready for injectables or laser treatments, is by using a topical anti-aging serum twice a day such as Revision’s Revox II. It contains anti-aging peptides to stimulate the growth of new collagen and firm and strengthen the dermis, which will help reduce the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles. Most importantly, wear your sunscreen 365 days a year

Talk to your medical skin care professional about the best plan for you. Those wrinkles will be scared away before all the Halloween candy in your house is gone!

Eye Shadow Technique For Hooded Eyes

If you struggle with experienced or hooded eyes or are just looking for a new way to apply your eye shadow, try the technique below to open up your eyes and allow your shadow to be seen!

As we age, we lose volume in our face including around our eyes. This can cause the eyelids to droop or “hood” hiding part or all of your eyelid. However, hooding is not limited to experienced eyes. People of all ages can have hooding of the eyes thanks to genetics. Whether caused by age or genetics, this poses a problem when applying makeup in the traditional three-color method of eyelid, crease and brow. If you’re not ready or interested in surgery or Botox® to correct the problem, you can use the following makeup technique to camouflage the issue and open up your eyes.

1. After applying your foundation and lid primer, divide your eyelid in half. Using a triple eye shadow palette such as jane iredale’s PurePressed Triple Shadow in Pink Bliss, apply the medium-color shade to the inner half of the eyelid (#1 on the photo).

2. Apply the darkest color to the outer half of the eyelid  and underneath the eye along the lashline as eyeliner (#2 in the photo).

3. Apply the lightest color to the brow bone and to the inner corner of the eye (#3).

4. Blend all the colors together with a clean, dry brush so it doesn’t appear that your eyelid is cut in half.

5. Line the top and bottom lashlines with jane iredale Eye Pencil in Brown/Black. Be sure to line the top lid a little thicker because once you open your eye, the liner will be hidden by the hooding if it is too thin.

6. Finish off your new look with jane iredale’s PureLash Extender & Conditioner and jane iredale’s Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice.
