Keeping Your Skin Under Control When Flying

Today’s Question: I fly a lot for work and it really takes a toll on my skin. Do you have any advice on how to keep my skin looking its best while traveling? Rhonda, Warsaw

A. Rhonda, while airplanes are great for getting us where we need to go quickly, they definitely are not great for our skin. Between the recycled air and extremely low humidity found in the airplane’s cabin, our skin becomes very dehydrated. If you already have dry skin, it will become even dryer. However, if you have oily skin, would you believe it can get oilier as your skin has to overcompensate for the lack of moisture in the air and on your face? So, what’s a girl to do when she wants to arrive at her destination looking more like someone on the do list than the don’t list?

First, you must hydrate and then hydrate some more. You have to replace all of that lost moisture, so it’s important to sip on water throughout your flight. Ideally you should drink eight ounces of water for every hour you’re in the air. Avoid any alcoholic or caffeinated beverages as those will dehydrate you even more. Save those for your after work cocktail hour. If your airline still serves those snack bags of pretzels or peanuts, you will want to skip those as well. The high salt content in those snacks can both dehydrate you further and cause swelling, which are two things you’re trying to keep out of your next meeting. Plan ahead and pack some healthy snacks for your journey like an apple, banana, protein bar or carrot sticks.

Before you take off, Rhonda, it is essential to apply a hydrating moisturizer followed by an SPF 30 or higher. Try Neova’s Day Therapy SPF 30 to take care of both steps in one. If you feel you need a foundation, I recommend you opt for a tinted moisturizer like jane iredale’s Dream Tint that will add additional moisture to your soon-to-be dehydrated skin as well as a sheer amount of color and coverage. If you feel you must wear foundation, be sure to wear a primer underneath it. This will not only give your skin an additional bit of moisture, but will protect your skin from the dry air, prevent moisture loss and help your makeup to last longer while traveling. I recommend jane iredale’s Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener. Throughout the flight, spritz your face with a hydration spray that will not only give your skin some extra moisture, but will also refresh and calm you as well. Just be sure not to mist your neighbor! Try jane iredale’s D2O Hydration Spray.

Once you arrive at your hotel, it’s time to wash off the old airplane air and get your skin hydrated. Wash your face with a mild cleanser like Obagi’s Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser and apply a moisturizer while your skin is still wet to allow it to absorb even better. While you are away you will want to maintain a skin care regime, but traveling with an army of products isn’t practical. If you take a travel cleanser, toner and sunscreen along with a moisturizer your skin should stay on track until you return.

No matter where you’re flying to for your next work project, Rhonda, your skin is going to experience a change in climate and water conditions. All those changes stress out your skin which can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, dehydrated skin and an overall dull appearance. Once you get back from your work trip, I recommend you have a chemical peel to exfoliate your skin and bring it back into balance. In no time, your skin will be healthy and glowing again and ready to tackle the next big meeting. If you have any questions about your skin care while flying and traveling, be sure to discuss them with your medical skin care specialist.

Avoid A Makeup Meltdown This Summer

Today’s Question: It’s been so hot out this summer and I’m getting so oily. What can I do to keep my makeup and skin looking fresh? Penelope, Winona Lake

A. Penelope, summer is the time to lighten up your makeup for a more natural, fresh-faced look. However, with the crazy heat and humidity we have been experiencing it’s easy for that minimal makeup look to create a maximum oil spill you could cook a pork chop on! Not exactly the cute summery look you were going for. You want to look nice for the barbecue, not be the barbecue.

Here are a few ideas to try that will help you have a shine-free summer:

1. Switch Up Your Cleanser

If you find your skin feeling greasy by lunch and your pores looking clogged from oil, dirt and sweat, consider switching to a cleanser with salicylic or lactic acid. These cleansers will help exfoliate your clogged pores and dissolve extra oil.

Try Obagi’s CLENZIderm Daily Care Foaming Cleanser or Neova’s Radiant Skin Cleanser.

2. Check Your Sunscreen

Change up your sunscreen to a zinc-based one with at least a 30 SPF.  Zinc won’t cause excess oil production or clog pores that can lead to breakouts like some sunscreens can.

Try Obagi’s Sun Shield SPF 50.

3. Lighten Up Your Moisturizer

Summer is a great time to switch up your morning routine to include an oil-free moisturizer with SPF. It saves time, money and your skin. Your skin will have weightless protection without any feeling of sunscreen. Another great option to consider, Penelope, is a tinted moisturizer. They provide sheer coverage with SPF protection perfect for a summer picnic.

Try PCA’s Weightless Protection SPF 45 or jane iredale’s Dream Tint.

4. Use A Primer

Primers are an often skipped step in the morning. Much like flossing your teeth, you know you should do it every day, but you just don’t always make the time for it. By using a primer underneath your foundation, it will help your makeup last longer, achieve a smoother complexion and minimize your pores. If you are exceptionally oily, I recommend you look for a primer that also includes silica that will help absorb the oil and control those over-active sebaceous glands.

Try jane iredale’s Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener or jane iredale’s Absence Oil Control Primer.

5. Flip Your Foundation

If you typically reach for a liquid foundation, but find that you are looking a little more greasy than dewy like J.Lo, you might want to switch to a BB cream or a pressed powder mineral foundation. A BB cream will give you the same feel as a liquid foundation, but it contains added benefits to minimize pores and wrinkles and function as a concealer. Some BB creams also contain an SPF and moisturizer, so it’s a great multi-tasking product to give you more time on the lake than in front of your mirror.

Try jane iredale’s Glow Time Mineral BB Cream or jane iredale’s PurePressed Base.

Penelope, don’t let your shiny face slip you up this summer. Try these suggestions and you should be on your way to a matte mug in no time. If you have any questions about your skin care regime, be sure to talk with your medical skin care specialist.

7 Tips To Battle Dry Skin This Fall

Today’s Question: It’s only the first week of November and my skin is already feeling dry. Should I switch my skin care products now?

Yes, it is that time of year when many people need to switch up their skin care regime. As the air chills and heaters blast, try these seven tips to prevent or treat the signs of dry skin:

1. Reevaluate Your Facial Cleanser

Be sure to use a gentle cleanser instead of one with scrubs in colder months to help alleviate drying skin. Never use bar soap on your face – especially if you are feeling dry.

Obagi’s Nu Derm Gentle Cleanser is an example of a great gentle cleanser.

2. Moisturize

Moisturize your skin twice a day. This is the most important thing you can do for your skin this fall if you’re feeling dry. Make sure your current moisturizer does not contain alcohol, which can make your skin even drier. Apply a moisturizer before your sunscreen for extra hydration. You also may need to switch to a moisturizer that is more of a heavier cream than a lotion.

Neova’s Night Therapy is specially formulated to stay on your skin while you sleep and not rub off on your pillow. Not only will it richly moisturize and heal your skin, but it will also help treat fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Sunscreen

You still need to wear your sunscreen throughout the fall and winter months to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays. Despite the gloomy clouds, the sun’s rays can still cause havoc on your skin creating wrinkles, brown spots and skin cancer.

Try Obagi’s Sun Shield SPF 50 for a lightweight, broad-spectrum sunscreen that works well for all skin types.

4. Vitamin C

Add a Vitamin C serum into your regimen to help moisturize, provide antioxidant protection and add a dewy glow.

Obagi’s Vitamin C serums are a great option. Available in four concentrations, ask your skin care professional which one is best for you.

5. Don’t Forget Your Lips!

Lips are highly vulnerable to the effects of dry, cold air. Use a lip balm that does not have irritating or drying ingredients such as menthol or petroleum jelly. Make sure it also contains SPF.

Jane Iredale’s Lip Drink, recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, contains SPF 15 and is more moist than other lips balms since it contains no petroleum jelly.

6. Drink Plenty of Water

By getting at least eight glasses of water each day you are helping your body to produce the natural oils your skin needs to stay properly hydrated. Remember that alcohol and caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea will only make you more dehydrated.

7. Take Short Showers

A warm bath or shower can feel great on a cold fall day, but water washes away
your skin’s natural oils and can dry out your skin. Pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it aggressively with a towel. Be sure to moisturize right after your shower with your skin still a little damp.

Talk to your medical skin care professional about the best plan to hydrate your skin this fall.
